H-town Community Map Project (Mar 22, 2010 - Apr 12, 2010)
We partnered with local talent to create an artistic map of the city's best-kept secrets.
Location of said map? In the heart of Montrose at 811 Richmond (next to Chapultepec Lupita).
Who helped us create the baddest mural Houston's ever seen? Our partner in culture Spacetaker.org & (we're just gonna put it out there) rockstar artist extraordinaire Anthony Thompson Shumate. See the flickr photos for a behind the scenes look at the evolution of the map. & Be sure to click the featured artist links below to show them some love!
The map installation highlights 10 places and experiences that are uniquely Houston and keep our city alive, artistic & amazing. Plus, we made this mission interactive and hosted an event (or shall we call it a "Fiesta!") to bring everyone together & nurture the community vibe at one of our featured hot spots, Saint Arnold Brewery.
At the event, guests also got a first look at our "making of" the mural video by Zenfilm. We also showed some *love* to the community (#SLGT) & supported local non-profit Noah's Kitchen along the way!
Our Top 10 "Local Best" featured places are:
- Little Bigs - Sliders, Shakes, Fries
- Saint Arnold Brewing Company - Texas' Oldest Craft Brewery
- Cactus Music - Houston's Exclusive Independent Record Store
- Caroline Collective - Coworking starts with community
- Alley Theatre - Cultural experiences since 1968
- Winter Street Studios - One of the most exciting workspaces for Houston's creative community
- Discovery Green - a 12-acre park located in downtown Houston
- Art Car Museum - Dedicated to contemporary art
- MFAH - Bringing fine art to more than 2.5 million people each year
- Jamail Skate Park - Houston's own state-of-the-art, world-class, in ground skate park
Anthony's Artist Statement
"My work incorporates a commercial dialect with the intellectualism of contemporary art. By exploiting familiar iconography and applying them to a provocative social language, I am able to make subversive commentary on the modern American social landscape."

Mark Austin |
Mark is a straight-laced red-headed accountant by day and a music-obsessed rocktographer by night. His photographs have graced the pages of Rolling Stone and the walls of the Hard Rock Hotel. A self-proclaimed taco-holic, Mark enjoys folding clothes, watching the Big Lebowski, scouring Craigslist for useless junk collectibles and trying to understand the stock market. Not in any particular order. And no concert is too far away.
